Fears that John Terry’s World Cup might have been over before it started have been eased after scans showed he has not broken a metatarsal.

The Chelsea captain was rushed to hospital from a club training session with a suspected broken foot. However, sources are saying the defender has undergone a scan which suggested he did not suffer a break and instead may have damaged ligaments.

The injury could still rule Terry out of this weekend’s FA Cup final match between newly-crowned Premier League Champions Chelsea and relegated Portsmouth, although if ligament damage is confirmed he could be fit in time for the World Cup.

Terry, who was seen wearing a foot protector, is expected to undergo a further battery of ligament tests tomorrow in his bid to return in time for the FA Cup final.

The set back comes at the end of what has been a tough season for the former England captain. Terry was forced to surrender the England captaincy earlier this year when revelations emerged about him having an affair with the ex-girlfriend of former team mate Wayne Bridge.

The news presents further difficulties for England boss Fabio Capello who is already sweating over the fitness of Gareth Barry and captain Rio Ferdinand.
