One of the biggest bugbears for many football fans is the price they have to fork out for their team’s merchandise but a few thousand Manchester United fans took advantage of a sweet deal on the club’s website before they realised what was going on yesterday.

According to The Sun, as many as 4,000 United fans snapped up the new home kit for just £22 (approximately €28) rather than the retail price of £55 (approximately €70) after a 60% discount was erroneously made available to fans on the club website.

The club eventually copped on to their error and amended it, but not before a few thousand fans had already bought the new kit (the full kit, with shorts and socks, was available for £37), with the whole fiasco costing the Red Devils around £200,000 in revenue, admittedly fairly small beans for a club who have just signed a record £750million kit deal with Adidas.

The club released a statement acknowledging the error which read: “United Direct, the Club’s Official Online Megastore, which is run by our e-commerce partner Kitbag, sent out communications which contained details of an erroneous discount code to our fans around the globe — this offer has now ended.

“United Direct will honour all consumer orders placed using this discount code, an approach which is fully endorsed by the club.”

Reports that a similar discount was briefly available for the signature of Bebe, before subequently being corrected, have yet to be substantiated.
