Spurs, Inter, Manchester United, Schalke, Lyon, Barcelona and FC Copenhagen are the eight teams from Groups A to D to advance to the next round.
FC Twente 3-3 Tottenham
Six goals were scored in what could only be described as a typical Tottenham Champions League match. Spurs took the lead in the 11th minute in farcical fashion, when 40-year-old goalkeeper Sander Boschker, making his Champions League debut, air-kicked Peter Wisgerhof's backpass and the ball trickled into the net.
The Dutch champions were awarded a penalty ten minutes later, when Benoit Assou-Ekotto handballed. Danny Landzaat scored the penalty, but was forced to take it again because of encroachment. His second penalty wasn't as good, but Gomes failed to stop it and the game was 1-1 at half time.
In the first minute of the second half, Aaron Lennon, who came on as a substitute for the injured Jermaine Jenas, played the ball to Jermain Defoe, who chipped Boschker from 12 yards to put Tottenham in front once again. The lead would only last for six minutes, however, as Roberto Rosales's bullet of a header gave Gomes no chance.
Defoe got his second and Spurs's third in the 53rd minute, slotting home a rebound after Wilson Palacios's shot was saved. Five minutes later, Nacer Chadli scored with a superlative free-kick to level it up for a third time. It would be the final goal of the match.
In the other match of the group, Inter were surprisingly hammered 3-0 by wooden spooners Werder Bremen. That result ensured Tottenham finished on top of the group and heaped further pressure on Rafa Benitez.
Manchester United 1-1 Valencia
The Red Devils were profligate at the start of their final group match, Dimitar Berbatov missing two guilt edge chances. Alex Ferguson's team were punished for this when Valencia took the lead on the half hour.
Alejandro Dominguez dispossessed a dithering Michael Carrick before playing the ball to Pablo Hernandez. The striker made no mistake and slotted the ball under Ben Amos. It was the first goal that Manchester United had conceded in the Champions League this season.
United pressurised their Spanish opponents in the second half and were eventually rewarded when Man of the Match Anderson volleyed a rebound into the back of the net after Ji-Sung Park's shot was saved.
The draw was enough for Manchester United to top the group. Elsewhere in Group C, a goal from Kenny Miller helped Rangers, who had already qualified for the Europa League, a draw away to Bursaspor.
Elsewhere
Schalke put their bad form in the Budesliga behind them as they ensured first position in Group B with an away win against Benfica. The Portuguese team's loss meant Lyon qualified in second, despite drawing at home to Hapoel Tel Aviv.
The top two in Group D, Barcelona and FC Copenhagen, both won comfortably. FC Twente, Rubin Kazan and Benfica will all go into the Europa League.
