As Winter announces its arrival with hurricane-worthy winds, it’s time to invest. Getting its name from the coarse fabric piilot cloth or p-cloth from which the Pea Coat is traditionally made of, this coat is generally navy in colour and was originally worn by European Naval Sailors. It is characterised by its broad lapels, double-breasted front, often large wooden or metal buttons and vertical slashed pockets.
The Pea Coat is the perfect winter coat, ticking all the boxes, with its naval heritage dictating a smart yet practical take on the classic blazer. You can pair it with anything from a suit to jeans, never failing to add a formal edge to any outfit. Chosen by the US Navy in the 1970’s as part of their uniform, it was only ever issued in navy or black.

Pea Coats have since been adapted by retailers, maintaining its original design but altering it to reflect current fashion trends. Burberry has made this jacket a major hit this season with it being produced for the cosiest of options. This style of coat is a favourite of celebrities such as Ewan Mcgregor and Hayden Christensen – for the sharp guy that does not try too hard. The high-street is awash with Pea Coats of different lengths and colours – so be sure to shop around.
