A Christmas single recorded by a group of random Twitter users here in Ireland has gone straight to no.1 in the iTunes chart. And it’s a proper belter.

It all started when one Twitter user, Brenda Drumm from Co.Kildare, tweeted a single Tweet that obviously reached the hearts and heads of 150 other tweeters as they all came together to record the chart topping single ‘Winter Song’ – or the song from the new O2 ad as the kids are calling it.

On November 19 this year, Brenda tweeted out, “Wouldn’t it be great to have a Twitter Xmas Single?”

Little did she know that those few words would have such a big impact on so many people. The twitterers answered her call on Sunday, November 27, as some 140 people gathered at the Banking Hall of the Westin Hotel in Dublin along with musicians and producers to record the little ditty.

The song is currently no.1 on iTunes, ahead of the original version by Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson, and costs just 99c with the proceeds going to the Neonatal special care unit at Holles Street National Maternity Hospital, a charity chosen by the Twitter choir.

Although the Twitter choir’s song is currently outselling the original, neither Sara Bareilles nor Ingrid Michaelson minds one little bit, as they both love the song. The Twitter choir’s musical director is currently en route to New York to pass on the CD to Ingrid, which is a happy coincidence as he was heading there for work anyway this week, according to Brenda Drumm.

In an exclusive chat with JOE, Brenda said, “It has just been an amazing experience. We topped the iTunes chart last Sunday and we’re on our way to topping the Irish chart too.”

And to think it all started with just one tweet. Fair play.

Will the Twitter song make it to the no.1 of the Irish charts for this Christmas? We certainly hope so. It would be a far sight better than the crap that the Jedwards undoubtedly have lined up.
