For the first 23 minutes of tonight’s Champions League clash with Juventus, Celtic were making a decent fist of what seemed an impossible task. Then this happened.
Celtic don’t need to be demeaned with faint praise about being ‘brave’ and ‘punching well above their weight’, but for 20 or so minutes in Turin this evening they looked comfortable facing up to Juventus, who look like being serious contenders to win the Champions League outright.
It was going to take a ridiculous miracle for Celtic to upset the odds and go through, but that prospect was as good as removed entirely when Alessandro Matri put the hosts in front midway through the first half.
It’s a goal that Gary Hooper won’t want to see again after he was easily robbed of the ball in a dangerous area in the build-up and although it wasn’t the prettiest of efforts, Juve were clinical and ruthless when the opportunity presented itself.
