Surprisingly, it still counted…

There were some strange scenes at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena tonight as Hoffenheim took on Bayer Leverkusen in a Bundesliga match up. While a few goals might have been expected, no one could have predicted Stefan Kiessling’s 70th minute strike that saw him scoring… through a hole in the side netting.

While it’s pretty obvious in the replay that the ball was wide of the post, the ref, Felix Brych, let the goal stand. Kiessling’s ghost goal put Leverkusen 2-0 up, but Sven Schipplock managed to pull one back for Hoffenheim in the 88th minute.

The match ended 2-1 to Leverkusen, so we’re sure that a few Hoffenheim fans will have a lot to say in the morning.

Speaking about the scenes following the match, Sports Mole reporter Matt Domm said: “Boos ring around the ground at full time and they are all directed at Felix Brych, the man in the middle. On the one hand, Hoffenheim should make sure there aren't any holes in their net, but on the other everyone could see that went wide!”
