The Brazilian fourth division was the scene of quite a bit of controversy this weekend as Tupi took on Aparecidense

The masseur of any sports team rarely grabs the headlines (to be fair, you don’t want them grabbing anything, really) but in Brazil this weekend that all changed in the Estádio Municipal Mario Helênio, in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.

Aparecidence’s team masseur got involved in the Serie D play-off as it looked for all the world that his team were about to concede an 89th minute goal as Tupi striker Ademilson had slotted the ball past the keeper, but some decent reactions from the masseur ensured that he kept the ball out with a great double save.

He also showed a good turn of pace as he absolutely ran for his life once he’d made the save, but things really kicked off as the referee had to stop the game for around twenty minutes to sort the whole thing out.

He decided to let the result stand as it was at 2-2, with Aparecidence going through on away goals to the next round of the playoffs. Tupi are, understandably, furious, and are expected to take the result to court to get it overturned.

The one thing we did notice is that he refused to use his hands despite the fact that he wasn’t even supposed to be there, so it’s good to see that he has respect for some of the rules, at least. This is football after all…
