It doesn’t make for pretty viewing, but this is what can happen when you flash a red rag to an angry bull. Thankfully, the victim survived.

When will the Spanish ever learn? Although bullfighting is a tradition in the country and has been practised for generations, incidents like this occur all too regularly with often more dire consequences.

On this occasion, the victim, 39-year old Juan Jose Padilla, escaped with his life after being gored by a bull while he lay prone on the ground during an exhibition in Zaragoza.

He is, however, likely to suffer facial paralysis and lose the sight in his right eye after the attack, during which he suffered eye, bone, muscle and skin damage after the 508 kg bull, known as Marques, thrust his left horn into Padilla and destroyed his face on Friday night.

Padilla underwent a five hour operation in a Zaragoza hospital after the incident, but surgeons were unable to repair a severed facial nerve.
