It was ultimately another disappointing year for Mayo GAA, and this documentary takes a look at their ongoing quest to win the big prize

Another summer where Mayo couldn’t get their hands on the Sam Maguire added further fuel to the fire of the story that the team has been cursed, and while it seems farfetched, there are definitely a few out there who might feel that the elusive win is never going to come.

That run of bad luck is what’s at the heart of this new half hour documentary, entitled An Mhallacht Mhaigh Eo, which aims to investigate the supposed curse associated with the Mayo senior football team. As the YouTube description for the documentary explains, “It is said that while travelling through Foxford and celebrating their win [after the 1951 All-Ireland win], the team passed out a funeral and had no respect for the deceased. A curse was placed on them; that they would never again win an All-Ireland until every member of that team had passed away.”

Among the contributors to the programme are GAA broadcasting legend Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Enda Kenny, as well as Paddy Prendergast and the late Mick Mulderrig, who were members of the 1951 Mayo team. The documentary was made with no budget by students of BA and MA Cumarsáid courses at Acadamh na hOllscolaíochata NUIG, which gives this piece an extra special touch too.

The documentary will air on Saturday the 4th of January at 6pm on TG4, and you can keep up with all the news from An Mhallacht on their Twitter page.
