Continuing to enlighten and entertain us, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield now explains to us how you cut your nails in space. It ain’t easy.
Earlier this week Commander Chris Hadfield entertained us with some amazing pictures from space and even a very cool clip of his watch floating around his wrist. Now he has another bit of great video for us.
Most of don’t put any thought into cutting our nails. We just do it and sweep up the debris afterwards. But now, thanks to the very informative work of Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station we now know that it takes a bit of planning to do the same job in zero gravity.
Hadfield explains that if he was to just clip his nails as normal bits of nails would float everywhere so they had to devise a system to do so that was clean. So he straps himself to a wall near an air vent where the nails will be sucked in. He then does the job while making sure to flick any rogue clippings into the vent. He then hoovers them up later and nobody ends up accidentally swallowing his nail debris.
