Ah, a good old muddy puddle, the saviour of many a goalkeeper’s blushes.

In Ireland, we know all about what’s it like to play on pitches covered in sh*te at this time of year, so the incident that happens in the video above will no doubt be familiar to the many of you who have played in junior leagues up and down the country.

In this case, it actually took place in a pretty important Lithuanian Cup quarter-final between Kruoja and Zalgiris and with ten minutes left on the clock, a Kruoja striker knocked the ball past the advancing ‘Zalgiris ‘keeper with a strike that he was probably certain was about to give his side a 2-0 lead.

Depressingly for him and his Kruoja team-mates, a muddy puddle held the ball up just as it was about to cross the line and while we can’t quite see whether he was already celebrating, the funniest thing about the clip is the joyful leap of the young fan behind the goal before he realised that it hadn’t, in fact, crossed the line.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Zalgiris plundered two late goals to advance to the semi-final, when they’ll surely be hoping that the aforementioned muddy puddle will have a big role to play yet again.

The foiled Kruoja striker in question shouldn’t be too distraught, however, as it isn’t a patch on by far the worst example of this sort of incident we’ve ever seen.
