If ever a comment came back to bite anyone in the ass, then surely it was Alan Hansen’s prediction about the youthful Manchester United side at the start of the 1995/96 season.
Having watched a United side that included Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt in the starting line-up (with David Beckham making a goalscoring cameo off the bench) lose 3-1 to Aston Villa on the opening day of that season, Hansen famously said ‘You’ll Never win anything with kids’ on Match of the Day, comments that have been figuratively rammed down his throat any amount of times since.
While United fans love to remind Hansen of the remark, the players themselves admitted that the comments did provide motivation in a season in which the Red Devils eventually went on to win the Premier League and FA Cup.
Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs discussed the effect of Hansen’s comments and other aspects of playing for Manchester United in a promotional appearance for Class of ’92, the documentary about the famous Youth Cup winning side, many of whom went on to enjoy phenomenal success at senior level.
The documentary has already received positive reviews from those who have seen advance screenings, but the general public will be able to make up their own minds after it goes on release this weekend.
