The last Basque derby at the San Mames stadium before Athletic Bilbao leave their historic ground for a new one started well with this goal

Athletic Bilbao against Real Sociedad is always a game with a great atmosphere, given that it's a local derby between the two Basque clubs.

Last night it was doubly so as it would be the last one held at Athletic's San Mames stadium, known as La Catedral to their fans.

They got a great start with this fantastic volley from Ibai Gomez on the half hour mark, after he took the cross first time and slammed it into the net.

However, Real Sociedad mounted a comeback, and ended up winning the game 1-3, with former Arsenal man Carlos Vela knicking the third.

Athletic Bilbao haven't been as successful this season as they were last when they rampaged their way to the Copa del Rey and Europa League finals, perhaps due to the loss of two of their key players, Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente. While the latter is still at the club, he rarely plays and will leave to go to Juventus in the summer.

Bielsa is a fantastic coach, but given Athletic's recent run of poor form and how far they've dropped off since last season, things are beginning to look a bit dangerous for them as they currently sit at 15th in the table.
