Video: How did this go in? Barely believable goal from the Holland under-21s last night

Either this guy is a genius or this was a complete fluke and we’d be inclined to subscribe to the latter theory if we’re being honest.

Either this guy is a genius or this was a complete fluke and we’d be inclined to subscribe to the latter theory if we’re being honest.

The Holland under-21 side were taking on their Georgian counterparts last night and didn’t encounter much of a challenge as they cruised to a 6-0 victory.

Luc Castaignos was one of the goalscorers for the Dutch on the night, but you’d have to ask him whether or not he meant what was a quite outrageous effort to put his side 3-0 up at the start at the second half.

Having received the ball from a throw-in, Castaignos ran out of space and was forced to the by-line close to corner flag when, practically with his back to goal, he swung in a swerving cross that flew over the keeper and into the net off the far post.

The natural reaction is to think that Castaignos was just trying to dig himself out of a tight situation and get rid of the ball in any way he could, but if you watch it again, it seems as if he deliberately struck the ball with the outside of his boot so that it would swing towards the goal, which is what it duly did.

It’s hard to gauge from Castaignos’ celebration if he meant it or not and although we’re still inclined to think he didn’t, it’s some effort if he did.

Having watched the goal, what do you think? Feel free to let us know in the comment box below.
