Video: Luis Figo’s spectacular strike for Real Madrid against Man United legends

He might now be known more for his appearance in a terribly cringeworthy Just for Men advert, but Luis Figo showed he can still cut it on the pitch last night.

The Portuguese legend featured in a star-studded Real Madrid legends line-up featuring Zinedine Zidane, Fernando Morientes, Roberto Carlos and Fernando Redondo amongst others against a less than star-studded Manchester United legends side that included the likes of Dion Dublin and Lee Sharpe at the Bernabeu last night.

The match was being played in aid of the Real Madrid Foundation’s academies in Africa and drew an impressive crowd of more than 60,000 supporters. Rather than having to watch a bunch of ex-pros huff and puff their way around the pitch, the fans were given to plenty to cheer about, particularly when Figo produced a stunning effort to put Real 2-1 in front in the second half.

Taking a pass from Zidane on the edge of the box, Figo sent a bullet into the top corner of Edwin van der Sar’s goal, although the Dutchman will have been bemused at Dion Dublin’s hilariously half-hearted attempt to put in a block.

Real eventually won the game 3-2, with Morientes and Redondo adding the other goals for Los Blancos and Lee Sharpe and Teddy Sheringham getting on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.

Check out Figo’s effort in the video above. A great effort surely, but he has a long, long way to go before we can forgive him for this…
