Last night was yet another memorable night for the outfit known as ‘The History Girls’ and how about this for a winning goal by Megan Connolly? Magic.

Dave Connell’s side marched onto the semi-finals of the European Championships after a 2-1 win over Sweden in Jessheim last night, with Savannah McCarthy and Megan Connolly hitting the back of the net to secure victory after Julia Wahlberg had put Sweden ahead early doors.

The Swedes weren’t in front for long, however, as McCarthy produced a brilliant looping header from Connolly’s free-kick to level the scores just after the 20th minute mark and Ireland’s pressure throughout the contest paid off ten minutes from time when Connolly curled a delicious free-kick in off the underside of the crossbar from 25 yards.

The Netherlands await in the semi-final in Mjondalen this Thursday, but with Spain, England and now Sweden already put to the sword, the sky is the limit for the girls in green and let’s hope they write another chapter in the history books in a few days’ time.

Brilliant stuff.
