Video: Move over Mike Denver, there’s a new Mayo song in town

The pre All-Ireland Final musical efforts coming out of Mayo haven’t been much to shout about so far, but thankfully, the closer we get to the game, the better the standard is getting.

Anyone that’s heard ‘Mayo are back’ by Mike Denver – who, it should be pointed out, is a Galway man – will forgive us when we say that the less said about it, the better.

You may also have noticed another effort we featured on the website yesterday that is far and away the craziest and most out there GAA song we have ever heard, but it isn’t exactly something that fans will be able to sing along to.

Thankfully, however, a couple of far better efforts have made their way into JOE Towers this morning as the quest to rival the brilliant ‘Jimmy’s winning matches’ heats up between now and Sunday week.

Establishing the first known link between Mayo and Flo Rida that we know about are the Ginger Melodeon Experience, who have delivered a traditional, and far better, take on the rapper’s ‘Whistle’ song called ‘Up Mayo’, which you can have a listen to in the video above.

The song is available to download for free on www.gingermelodeonexperience.moonfruit.com and all proceeds go to the Irish Cancer society.

Thanks to both Martina Burke and Oisín MacAnBhiocaire for letting us know about this one.

Like buses, these Mayo songs have a tendency not to arrive on their own and Myles Kelly from Ballintubber – home of Mayo manager James Horan, of course – has penned his own tribute to the Green and Red called ‘The Mayo man’, which you can check out below.

Hat-tip to James McGing for sending this one into us on Twitter.

With over a week still to go until the most novel All-Ireland Football Final in many a year, you can expect plenty more of these offerings from both sides over the next week or so, hopefully, it goes without saying, of a better standard than Mike Denver’s offering.
