We reckon that Fabrice Reuperne is a national hero on the Caribbean island this morning after he scored the goal of his life.

It might be the least loved of all the continental football tournaments, but the Gold Cup kicked off in some style on Sunday. The competition, to determine the champions of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, runs until the end of July but we doubt we’ll see a better goal than this.

Canada, ranked 88 in the world, were supposed to be able to beat Martinique, a team that aren’t even a full member of Fifa as they fall under the French flag.

But the island of just 400,000 people produced a massive shock by beating Canada 1-0 in the Rose Bowl. The result would have been enough to grab the headlines, but the manner of the win, with a goal in the last minute of added time, made it even more special.

But then you see the goal and it takes the result up a to a whole new level. A scrappy cross is half cleared by the Canadian defence and the ball falls to Fabrice Reuperne about 30 yards from goal. The veteran midfielder simply lashed the ball at goal and it flew into the net at ferocious speed. He will probably never hit as sweet a shot again in his career.
