Video: The comedy own goal of the season was scored in Holland this weekend

We were going to say we feel sorry for the poor fella, but this own goal is so hilariously atrocious it doesn’t deserve sympathy, only ridicule.

We were going to say we feel sorry for the poor fella, but this own goal is so hilariously atrocious it doesn’t deserve sympathy, only ridicule.

There are few things quite as funny on a football pitch as a comically bad own goal and there was one for the all-time blooper reel scored at the weekend in Holland by Utrecht defender Mike van der Hoorn, who is probably still wondering how he contrived to turn the ball into his own net in a humiliating defeat to AZ Alkmaar.

Having cut out a cross inside the six-yard box, van der Hoorn’s feet began to act as if not part of his body and with nobody else around, he practically fell over himself and knocked it into his own net from a few yards out.

Nobody, van der Hoorn included, knew how to react, but rather than rub it in, the Alkmaar players felt so embarrassed for him that a couple of them (and the referee) gave him a pat on the back in consolation afterwards.

If that downright awful own goal wasn’t bad enough, Utrecht had two players sent off on the way to a 6-0 thrashing.

Not their day alright
