When are football authorities going to do something to clamp down on this cynical fouling that is blighting the game at the moment?
Lionel Messi is a hard man to stop when he’s in full flow, but the Real Sociedad players had obviously been studying videos of Gaelic Football matches in recent seasons prior to their meeting with Barcelona last night, such was the similarity between their attempts to stop Messi and some of the more cynical Gaelic Football tackles that will hopefully be eradicated by the introduction of the black card this season.
To be fair to Sociedad, there was only one real instance of deliberate cynical fouling of Messi when one Sociedad player tried and failed to drag him to the crowd before Ion Gaztanga finished the job with a tackle that wouldn’t look out of place on a rugby pitch, never mind a GAA pitch.
Wait ‘til Joe Brolly gets wind of this. Gaztanga can forget about himself as a man etc. etc.
