Vine: Here’s Mesut Ozil’s less than brilliant penalty attempt against Bayern

It was a decent save by Manuel Neuer but his compatriot hit it straight down the middle.

It was a decent save by Manuel Neuer but his compatriot hit it straight down the middle.

Arsenal made the fastest of fast starts at home to Bayern Munich in tonight’s Champions League. They tore at their fancied German opponents, and Manuel Neuer was forced to make one great save from surprise pick Yaya Sanogo in the opening minutes.

Wojciech Szczęsny also had to pull off a class stop to deny Toni Kroos before the home side were presented with a golden opportunity when Mesut Ozil was felled in the box by Jerome Boateng. The German picked himself up to take the spot kick but his effort was straight down the middle and Neuer raised a big strong hand to keep the game scoreless.

Ozil looked suitably disappointed with his effort but the missed chance may have taken the air out of Arsenal’s early surge. It remains 0-0 with 20 gone.

Update: And now David Alaba has had an even worse attempt from 12 yards. Arsenal down to 10 men after Szczęsny was sent off after taking down Arjen Robben.
