Blockbuster; Someone is making a Tetris movie. Yes, really

JOE

Rumour has it the cast will come in all shapes and sizes…

We’re not saying Hollywood is running out of ideas but this is a video game adaptation we never thought we’d see.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a Tetris movie is in the works. Yes, the fiercely addictive game that launched the Gameboy and that still is a great way to while away 15 minutes on the bus is headed to the big screen.

A company called Threshold, run by a guy called Larry Kasanoff, are the people behind it. Kasanoff has been down this road before, as he produced the Mortal Kombat movies in the 1990s.

He tells the paper: “It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”

As Kasanoff sees it, “brands are the new stars of Hollywood.” He goes on to say: “We have a story behind ‘Tetris’ which makes it a much more imaginative thing. We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness. What you [will] see in ‘Tetris’ is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”

Now, if we are being optimistic here we would say that the LEGO film was very awesome so Tetris could be another one of those. However, Battleship was fairly brutal, so we hope Tetris:The Movie, if it ever gets made, is more like the former than the latter.

Just so long as they keep the theme tune…
