Do you shop here by any chance?

SuperValu is the most popular supermarket in Ireland but only just, according to figures released today.

SuperValu was named as Ireland’s most popular supermarket after a study conducted over 12 weeks ending 31 January by Kantar WorldPanel, a global expert in shoppers’ behaviour.

The figures revealed that SuperValu remained as Ireland’s number one retailer with 25% of the grocery market, narrowly beating off competition from Tesco (24.5%) and Dunnes Stores (24.1 %).

Lidl and Aldi commanded 8% and 7.9% of the grocery market respectively, with other outlets responsible for the remaining 10.5%.

Although SuperValu came out on top of the pile, Dunnes Stores enjoyed the strongest growth of the top three with sales up 5.1% compared to last year, while Lidl and Aldi both reported strong improvements on their 2015 figures.

All in all, the figures represent good news for the Irish economy, with shopping spend increasing by 3.8% over the last 12 weeks, a slight improvement on the Christmas figure of 3.5%.

Dare we say the boom is back?
