It is nearly over (sob) but we’ve had some pretty amazing stuff go down since June 12. Here’s our 10 favourite moments from the World Cup so far.
1. RVP header v Spain
The first truly great moment of this World Cup as Robin van Persie set Spain’s self-destruction in train. It was a stunning piece of improvisation from the Manchester United striker as the Netherlands went on their way to a 5-1 win.
This single moment, which made it 1-1 in the opening group game, proved Spain’s downfall and they never recovered.
2. Tim Cahill volley v Netherlands
Australia may be long forgotten since we got to the business end of the tournament, but the Socceroos produced some fine stuff in the toughest group of all. This, from former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill, was sublime.
3. Colombia goal celebration
Colombia were just a joy to behold, whether scoring or celebrating goals.
4. Cheick Tiote falling over…
Our one regret about this clip is that it isn’t set to some Benny Hill music. Not one that the Newcastle United midfielder will want to see again.
5. The Luis Suarez bite
This one slipped under the radar a bit, though we seem to remember seeing a few still images on Sky Sports News in between the cricket updates.
6. James Rodriguez goal v Uruguay
Our favourite player of the World Cup, and anyone who says there’s been a better goal in the tournament is just being contrary.
7. Tim Howard block at the airport
We’ve known about him for quite a while, but all of a sudden the Everton goalkeeper is a celebrity in the United States on a par with Jay-Z, David Letterman and Kermit The Frog.
Hence all the unwanted attention.
8. Messi pass v Switzerland
Genius. Just genius.
9. Sabella falling over
We found ourselves wondering who was first on Twitter with the Del Boy comparisons, as Argentina’s manager reacted comically to Gonzalo Higuain’s header hitting the crossbar against Belgium.
10. Crying Brazil fan
The demise of a footballing giant, as the craziest game in the history of football saw Germany defeat the hosts 7-1 in Belo Horizonte. It was too much for this young fan…
