Never forget just how good some of the 90’s soundtracks were…

JOE recently told you about some of our favourite songs from 80’s films but it’s time to move into the era of scanda jackets, New Balance shoes and Joe Bloggs jeans.

Yes the 90’s provided us with some stellar soundtracks but here are ten of those perfect moments when music meets film.

Reservoir Dogs

No list about songs used in 90s films is complete or credible without a mention to the master of the soundtrack, Mr Quentin Tarantino.

When JOE arrives into work we always try to copy this scene… the people next door are starting to look at us funny.

The Matrix

Question? What song is a perfect fit to end a film about a man that has been awoken from an oppressive system that seeks to control your mind in an effort to make you subservient to machines.

Sadly it’s not Aqua’s Barbie Girl. Perfection thy name is Rage Against the Machine.

Dumb and Dumber

There are approximately 1,835,277 reasons why this film is an absolute classic but it’s easy to overlook just how just how good the music is.

We don’t blame anyone for losing track of gems like this in between all the moments of men falling off jetways, dead birds and epic diarrhoea.

This song just instantly makes us feel great.

Empire Records

A film for the music hipsters before the term hipster even existed (although JOE and all our readers knew about this before they did.)

Like Clerks there is something effortlessly enjoyable about seeing a bunch of slackers do nothing but sit around and talk about music, random crap and pop culture.

We would never do that type of thing. *Cough, cough*

And yes, that is Renee Zellweger and Liv Tyler.

The Commitments

Like the Sunday Game, potatoes and the rain this song is an Irish institution.

Mark Rice originally recorded it in 1965, just so you know.

Trainspotting

We think it’s fair to say that Danny Boyle’s ’96 groundbreaking film is the best soundtrack of the decade and choosing just one song from it is almost impossible.

The list of artists include; Lou Reed, Primal Scream, New Order, Leftfield and an absolute classic from Iggy Pop.

This, just this.

Cruel Intentions

Yes the film is one to watch with your girlfriend but who can deny 1) Sarah Michelle Gellar in that film and 2) the music featuring the likes of Placebo, Blur, Faithless and of course…

He Got Game

After a four-year hiatus, Public Enemy returned with the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s underrated film about basketball, family and redemption.

Pretty serious and weighty subjects you will agree, the title tracks nails them though.

Pulp Fiction

JOE generally doesn’t include the same band, film or director twice in any list but we think it would be blasphemy to omit Tarantino’s masterpiece.

The soundtrack and film are as perfect a pairing as bread and butter, tea and biscuits, sausage and chips.

JOE is hungry now, what were we talking about again? Oh yeah this thing…

Fight Club

So how do we end this list of ours? How about the exact same song that David Fincher used when he wanted to show that the world was descending into mayhem.

We think that never before has a song so perfectly summed up a film.

So what do you guys think? There is bound to be some that you would like to see included. A Life Less Ordinary, Scream, Forrest Gump. Let us know below.
