Anne Hathaway has one pet hate: calling her by her name.
The 38-year-old actress explained her regret at using her real name during an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.’
“Everybody call me Annie, please,” she told Fallon.
“So feel free, to call me anything but Anne.”She then explained that only her mother is allowed to call her by her name.
“(The) only person who calls me Anne is my mother… and when she does it’s not necessarily a good thing.
“She only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,”
“So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me… People are like, ‘Anne!’ And I’m like ‘What? What did I do?’”
Hathaway shares a name with William Shakespeare’s wife whom he resided with in Stratford-upon-Avon and is remembered as the town’s most famous resident to this day.
Despite the rich historical connotations around the name, the actress admitted she would still change her name given the chance.
“When I was 14 years old, I did a commercial, and I had to get my (Screen Actors Guild) card and they asked me, ‘What do you want your name to be?'” she said.
“And I was like, ‘Well, it should be my name. My name’s Anne Hathaway.’ So that seemed like the right choice. It never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people will call me Anne.”
Hathaway praised her fellow actors and actresses who abide by her wishes to be called ‘Annie’.
“People are so lovely, they don’t want to be presumptuous, and so I think they come up with workarounds on set because the truth is nobody’s comfortable calling me Anne ever. It doesn’t fit. I’m an Annie,”
The American actress is best known for her roles in “The Princess Diaries”,”The Devil Wears Prada” and “Les Miserables” among other hit films.
