It has been suggested that the change will help vulnerable road users.
This Thursday, 15 November, will see a vote by Dublin city councillors on whether to extend the length of time that the green man symbol displays at pedestrian crossings.
It has been proposed to extend the length of time by just one second.
Green Party councillor Ciarán Cuffe tabled the motion, arguing that a longer period of time will be beneficial for more vulnerable pedestrians.
As tabled on Wednesday, the motion proposal reads: “That the ‘green man’ period at pedestrian signals throughout the city centre be increased by one second in order to better facilitate more vulnerable road users who would benefit from additional crossing time.”
Dublin Cycling hailed the move on Twitter, noting that even this minor change is likely to make a “huge” difference.
This may seem like a small thing, but extending the green pedestrian signal time will make a huge difference to people with disabilities, the elderly, and young families. We strongly support this proposal from @CiaranCuffe. https://t.co/Zqj0fhXwQC
