5 reasons Extraordinary on Disney+ should be your next binge watch comedy

JOE

Brought to you by Disney+

With plenty of Irish stars and deadpan humour by the bucketload, there’s a lot to love about this series, now streaming exclusively on Disney+.

We’re all too familiar with the chore of finding your next binge watch. Sometimes we scroll through options for what feels like hours, and before we know it, our eyelids are heavy and bedtime calls.

If you’re on the lookout for the perfect decompression watch, we’ve got just the show in mind.

The second season of Extraordinary has just landed on Disney+, and it ticks all our boxes. This hit comedy series is set in a world where everyone receives a superpower when they turn 18. Everyone but our heroine Jen (Máiréad Tyers), that is.

The second season picks up right where season one left off. Jen has enrolled as a client in a powers clinic but discovers gaining a power isn’t the smooth-sailing she hoped it would be. Meanwhile, her ex-cat now boyfriend Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) has had an unexpected revelation about his past, while Kash (Bilal Hasna) and Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) are attempting to navigate their break up as grown-ups.

If you’ve yet to discover Extraordinary, you’re in for a treat. Here are 5 reasons it deserves to be your next binge watch.

1. It’s bursting at the seams with Irish talent

Extraordinary was the big break for Cork’s own Máiréad Tyers, but she’s not the only Irish star on the billing. Siobhán McSweeney, of Derry Girls fame plays Mary, Jen’s mother, while Father Ted legend Ardal O’Hanlon voices Jen’s late father Martin.

2. It’s a refreshing twist on the superhero genre

Superpowers take centre stage in Extraordinary and the show’s creator Emma Moran has succeeded in building a magical world. At the same time, Extraordinary is a laugh-a-minute comedy show and it also dips its toes into the rom-com genre too.

3. Jen is super-relatable

Who among us has never felt out of their depth, or a bit behind in life? Jen knows exactly what it feels like to not measure up to those around you, and she captures the experience with a generous dose of deadpan humour, making Extraordinary a deeply relatable watch.

4. The soundtrack is banger after banger

Extraordinary boasts an incredible playlist of hits from indie greats, including Modest Mouse, Princess Nokia, The Go! Team and The Shins.

5. Each episode leaves you wanting more

With an engaging storyline, loveable characters and whip-smart writing, Extraordinary makes for the perfect binge-watch. Trust us, you’ll be reaching for the Next Episode button again and again and before you know it, you’ll have devoured the whole show.

You can watch both seasons of Extraordinary exclusively on Disney+ right now.
