If you’re looking for some staycation inspiration, we’ve got the ideal itinerary right here.
As summer 2024 draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the season, and celebrate just some of the incredible attractions, experiences and sites we have at our doorstep.
Indeed, Ireland is bursting at the seams with things to do, see and eat, and one family that know this all too well is the Riddett family, who won The Great Aviva Road Trip 2024. Earlier this summer, the family – mam Michelle, dad Steve and their children Emma and Alex – prepared to enjoy the very best our country has to offer in style.
The Riddetts packed up and hit the road in the comfort of a Citroën C5 Aircross ë-Series Plug-In Hybrid, and they spent the next 10 days taking in some of Ireland’s greatest attractions and staying at luxurious four star hotels along the way.
In the mood for some staycation inspiration? We got a hold of the Riddett family itinerary, and it makes for an unforgettable road trip.
Day One
The Riddetts kicked off their adventure at the Aviva offices in Dublin, where they received the keys to their sleek Citroën C5 Aircross ë-Series Plug-In Hybrid, ready to hit the road. Their first destination? The fun-filled Kia Ora Farm in County Wexford.
At Kia Ora Farm, the family enjoyed a day packed with excitement. Steve and Alex showed off their competitive side on the foot golf course, while Michelle and Emma bonded with the farm’s adorable animals. Emma especially loved cuddling bunnies and meeting emus and alpacas. The farm’s diggers and go-karts also made for an action-packed start to their journey.
Day Two
On day two, the Riddetts headed to Tramore Surf School in County Waterford, where they enjoyed a perfect day on the beach. Under the guidance of their instructor Darragh, Emma and Alex tried their hand at surfing for the first time. Though wobbly at first, both kids quickly got the hang of standing on the board, and by the end of the day, they were hooked on the thrill of riding the waves.
After the beach, the family took a scenic trip aboard the Waterford Suir Valley Railway. The relaxing journey through the countryside gave the family a chance to unwind and enjoy the views, with friendly staff making the experience even more special.
Day Three
Castlecomer Discovery Park was the next stop on the Riddetts’ journey, and it didn’t disappoint. Emma and Alex were buzzing with excitement as they tackled the climbing wall and zipped across the sky walk, while Michelle and Steve took in the beautiful surroundings.
Alex’s favourite activity was archery, and the whole family was blown away by the range of activities available. After a full day of adventure, they couldn’t recommend the park enough, and with excellent food options on-site, it was the perfect spot for an all-day family outing.
Day Four
On day four, the Riddetts ventured to Leahy’s Open Farm in County Cork, where they spent the day exploring the farm’s many attractions. From petting animals to getting lost in the Mystery Maze, there was something for everyone.
Emma had her hair braided by the talented Evie and Lily, while Steve and Michelle had a heartwarming chat with farmer Eddie, the farm’s founder. The family loved the zip line, barrel train, and chocolate factory, and they were particularly charmed by the farm’s rich history and the warm hospitality of its staff.
Day Five
Day five was all about exploring the seaside town of Cobh and taking in the beauty of Cork Harbour. The family enjoyed a guided boat tour with Cork Harbour Boat Hire, getting stunning views of Spike Island and the surrounding area. Emma and Alex even got the chance to take the wheel and steer the boat themselves!
After their boat adventure, the family visited Blackrock Castle and Observatory, where they learned about the history of the castle and got hands-on with interactive exhibits on space and science. The highlight of the visit was the view from the top of the castle and seeing the impressive Big Bertha telescope.
Day Six
The Riddetts were welcomed with open arms at Ballyhass Mallow Activity Centre, where Emma and Alex had a blast zip-lining above the lakes for two hours. The kids felt like superheroes as they zipped across the water, while Steve and Michelle relaxed in the sauna and plunge pool.
The family also took on the Aquapark’s inflatable obstacles, with plenty of laughs and splashes along the way. It was a day full of fun and adventure, and the family slept well after all the excitement.
Day Seven
On day seven, the Riddetts visited the Toy Soldier Factory, where they met Joan and Lars, whose family has been running the business for generations. The family had the chance to participate in a workshop, making and painting their own toy soldiers—a unique and creative experience that they all enjoyed.
Steve, Michelle, Emma, and Alex were impressed by the craftsmanship and history of the factory, and they left with their very own handcrafted souvenirs to remember the day by.
Day Eight
Suas Climbing Centre in Limerick was the Riddetts’ next adventure, where John their guide, introduced them to the world of indoor rock climbing. After a few initial nerves, the kids quickly took to the walls, leaving their parents behind as they raced to the top.
Later, the family headed to the International Rugby Experience, where they tried their hand at various rugby skills, from throws and kicks to referee decisions. The experience was both fun and educational, and the stunning views from the top of the building made for a perfect end to the day.
Day Nine
In Galway, the family’s competitive spirit was back in full force as they hit the track at Galway City Karting. Steve dominated the race, but the whole family had a fantastic time zooming around the track and playing games in VR World afterwards.
Next up was the Galway Atlantaquaria, where the Riddetts were amazed by the marine life on display. From sharks and rays to tiny diatoms, the family learned about the wonders of the ocean and had the chance to see sea creatures up close.
Day Ten
The Riddetts’ final day on the road began at Craggaunowen Castle and Crannog, where they explored Ireland’s ancient past. The kids loved meeting Tony, the interactive Druid, while Steve and Michelle enjoyed learning about traditional craftsmanship from Jack, the wood turner.
Their last stop was the Shannon Aviation Museum, where Steve, an aviation enthusiast, was in his element. The family tried a flight simulator, toured historic aircraft, and learned fascinating facts from their knowledgeable guides, Jack, and Adam. It was the perfect end to a truly unforgettable journey.
