Shell is preparing to hand over part of its French fuel business to Irish energy group DCC Energy, in a deal that could see around 70 petrol stations and eight LNG facilities change ownership.
The proposed takeover, reported by RTÉ, is expected to be completed between April and June 2027.
However, the transaction is not yet final, with consultations involving employee representatives still to take place.
Approximately 35 members of staff are expected to move across as part of the agreement. Neither company has revealed the price being discussed.
For DCC Energy, the acquisition would provide an opportunity to grow its presence in France and strengthen its position in the European energy market.
The Dublin-headquartered group supplies energy products to millions of customers across Europe and the United States, with much of its business focused on delivering fuel and other energy solutions directly to customers.
The company already has an established presence in Ireland through brands including Flogas and Certa. Its operations also cover forecourts and services for commercial vehicle fleets.
Shell has acknowledged that a sale is being considered, although it has offered little information about the negotiations.
“Shell is considering a sale of its retail forecourts business in France,” a company spokesperson said.
The proposed sale comes despite continued profits from Shell's wider marketing division, which includes petrol stations and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The business recorded adjusted earnings of $1.3 billion in the latest quarter, compared with $1.2 billion in the equivalent period the previous year.
The French transaction would mark a change in ownership for a long-established part of Shell's European retail operations, while potentially giving DCC Energy a substantial new network of sites.
The announcement also comes as energy prices remain a concern for households in Ireland, with fuel costs featuring in the debate around Budget 2027 and its proposed tax measures.
