Video: Boyne Valley Honey and AIB open rooftop apiary in Ballsbridge

We wonder if they’re going to change the bank’s name to AIBee?

We wonder if they’re going to change the bank’s name to AIBee?

There’s a buzz in the capital at the moment and it’s all thanks to Boyne Valley Honey and AIB who recently launched Ireland’s first rooftop apiary on a commercial building.

The initiative, led by Boyne Valley Honey in partnership with AIB, will see over 200,000 honeybees located on the 6th story roof of AIB bank in Ballsbridge.

It is expected that the bees will pollinate a myriad of flowers and trees within a 5-kilometre radius of the hives and produce an average of 20 jars of honey per hive by the end of the summer.

While the initiative may not solve the world’s worrying honeybee disappearance, it’s certainly a fantastic idea from both Boyne Valley Honey & AIB and we can only hope that other large corporations follow suit by taking a closer look at how we can sustain such a fragile ecosystem.
