Suspect in Jamey Carney murder to remain in detention in Jordan

No plan has been set in motion to return Ahmad al-Saqar to Ireland yet.

Gardaí are seeking the extradition of Ahmad al-Saqar, 28, in connection with the death of the 43-year-old in Killarney, Co Kerry, on July 6th. He had been seeking asylum in Ireland since mid-2024.

Jamey Carney was originally from New York and had been living with her teenage daughter in Killarney since 2021. Her daughter discovered her body at around 1.20pm on July 7.

The case file was submitted to the DPP last month, and an arrest warrant is supported.

Mr Al-Saqar has been held in his native country for over two months since he boarded a bus from Co.Kerry in the early hours of July 7th. He flew from Dublin Airport to Turkey before Gardai were able to notify ports.

Ireland does not have an extradition treaty with Jordan, but an agreement is currently being worked out between the two, given the serious nature of the crime he is suspected of.

It is also believed the fact that Carney was an American citizen may have been a factor in the decision of the Jordanian authorities to arrest and detain Al Saqar over her murder in Ireland.

American authorities would not be able to extradite anyone for Carney’s murder because it happened in Ireland, they could assist with the investigation and they can also make diplomatic representations.

The USA and Jordan do have a treaty.

It is understood Jamey was assaulted and asphyxiated in a bedroom. The killer covered her body with bedclothes to make it look like she had been sleeping.

Ms Carney had inherited nearly €400,000 only weeks before her death.
