Sandler looks to be giving us a sequel to the ’90s comedy classic

Drew Barrymore has given one of the biggest confirmations yet that Happy Gilmore 2 is on its way.

In a new clip from The Drew Barrymore Show, the star began by discussing reports that Adam Sandler “may have written the first draft for Happy Gilmore 2.”

“I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,Barrymore said. “I sent Sandler a video of that, and then he sent me another video back, and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script.”

Later on in the clip, Barrymore confirms that she received a response from the actor.

“This just in, I have breaking news,” the host says. “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.”

“There is a process, and that process is in process.”

It comes after another of the cast members from the iconic 1996 sports comedy Happy Gilmore hinted that the movie’s creator Adam Sandler is currently working on a script for a sequel.

Christopher McDonald, who plays Shooter McGavin in the original, appeared as a guest earlier last month on the US sports podcast The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima.

In the episode, McDonald revealed that he recently ran into Sandler, who apparently showed him a first draft of the long-awaited follow up film.

“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this’,” McDonald said.

“I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

The 69-year-old actor added: “I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Happy Gilmore was a huge success when it was released in 1996, earning a total of $41.2 million at the box office worldwide.

The movie tells the story of an unsuccessful ice hockey player who discovers a newfound talent for golf and competes in a golfing tournament to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure.

McDonald’s character, Shooter McGavin, is an arrogant star golfer who despises Happy’s lack of proper etiquette and acts as the main antagonist of the film.

McDonald heaped praise on his former co-star and friend, Sandler, and said: “Adam’s just killing it out there as you know. I saw his latest Netflix comedy show and I was just laughing at everything. He’s so freaking funny.”

The host of the podcast asked McDonald what does it feel like to have played such an iconic and much-loved character.

Christopher said: I’m kind of beside myself. I remember going to the first screening when the movie came out, and nobody seemed to be really loving Shooter.

“The best way to play a bad guy like Shooter McGavin is to uplift the lead guy, in a smarmy kind of way,” he added.

“It’s just a blast to play that kind of stuff and I enjoyed it so much. People love to hate the Shooter, and I love that.”
