Random Liam Neeson facts: he has played a priest in films, he has voiced the character of a priest in The Simpsons and he was even named after a priest. Now however, he has admitted that he is considering converting to Islam. What a curveball!
The Irish Independent reports that the actor has told a British newspaper that Islamic prayer “got into his spirit” while he was filming in Istanbul.
“The Call to Prayer happens five times a day and for the first week it drives you crazy, and then it just gets into your spirit and it’s the most beautiful, beautiful thing,” he said.
“There are 4,000 mosques in the city. Some are just stunning and it really makes me think about becoming a Muslim,” he added.
Neeson, who was raised a devout Catholic, said that he felt his faith had been challenged in recent times and admitted that he is “constantly reading books on God or the absence of God and atheism.”
This is not the first time that Neeson has been outspoken about religion and spiritual matters.
In 2010 he faced fierce backlash after refuting claims by C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, that Aslan the lion is based on Christ. Neeson, who voiced the character of Aslan, said that the lion was based on other spiritual leaders such as Mohammed and Buddha.
“I was reared a Catholic but I think every day we ask ourselves, not consciously, what are we doing on this planet? What’s it all about?” said Neeson.
We’re not quite sure Liam, but if we find out we’ll tell you.
