When Jurassic Park was re-released to cinemas last year – seemingly without explanation – many wondered why it wasn’t converted into 3D. Universal have evidently been working to solve that problem too.
As such, Universal have announced that the Steven Spielberg dino classic, which was once the highest grossing movie of all time, will return to cinemas on July 19.
Before you get too excited, however, we should that the date in question is July 19, 2013. It sounds like it’ll take a lot of time to put those dinosaurs through the 3D process after all.
One of the main reasons for the 3D re-release (aside from the fact it’s guaranteed to make a packet, just as The Lion King 3D did last year), is that the film currently sits at a $915 million worldwide gross, with a successful push for next summer potentially revitalizing the franchise for a reboot and tipping the original over the one billion mark.
Spielberg’s producing partner Kathleen Kennedy had hinted as much last year when discussing whether the film would be a success in 3D, stating: “I'm not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the filmmakers gets intricately involved in the post-conversion – I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture."
So there you have it – “hold onto your butts” on July 19 next year.
