With the release of his latest film, The Man with the Iron Fists coming next week, JOE decided to take a look back at the five movies that really define the ridiculously talented Kiwi thespian.
The Insider
Not only Crowe’s best film but actually one of the best films ever made. High praise indeed, we know, but Michael Mann’s adaptation of the real life case of a corporate whistle blower in a tobacco firm is utterly, truly superb – and Crowe is spectacular in it.
LA Confidential
While not just a Crowe film, and more of an ensemble piece, this was really the first time that Hollywood noticed his talents – with every top director in Hollywood then scrambling to work with him.
Gladiator
Ridley Scott is the man responsible, probably more than any other, for the superstar that Crowe is today. He won an Oscar for his excellent work in this action packed, touching and seminal epic. Gladiator will be watched in film school for years to come.
Romper Stomper
An Aussie production that, for the first time, gave Russell Crowe the dense material he needed to really showcase his skills. His performance here is layered, subtle and absolutely fantastic.
A Beautiful Mind
Famously nominated for his second Oscar, which he lost because of PR more than anything else, A Beautiful Mind was the underlining that Hollywood needed that Russell Crowe was not just a critical darling but genuine box-office.
