According to reports today, an Irish movie channel will be launched soon as part of the new digital TV package.
From The Wind That Shakes The Barley, to Intermission, to The Guard, to In Bruges, there's no shortage of quality Irish films out there and according to a report in today’s Sunday Independent, soon we will all have a channel devoted exclusively to showing them.
The paper reports that RTE's new digital television platform will contain an Irish movie channel, as well as the RTE channels. The national broadcaster will also be obliged to transmit TV3 channels and TG4, as well as Oireachtas TV and the movie channel.
It sounds like a great idea to us and if used properly it could be a space for some lesser known Irish movies to get more exposure.
The digital switchover takes place on October 24 but the report doesn't tell us if the movie channel will be available on launch day.
