59 more people have died from Covid-19 in Ireland, 229 new cases

Very sad news.

59 more people have died from Covid-19 and 229* new cases have been confirmed in Ireland.

It brings the total number of deaths in Ireland to 1,159 and the total number of confirmed cases to 19,877.

As of midnight on Monday, 153,054 tests have been carried out in Ireland with 41,470 tests carried out in the last seven days.

5,335 of these tests were positive giving a positivity rate of 12.9%.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer said: “While there are many facets to Ireland’s approach to managing the impact of Covid-19, NPHET’s primary responsibility is to consider the impact on the public’s health and to advise on measures that can limit that impact.”

20 more people also died in Northern Ireland from coronavirus, the North’s Department of Health reported on Tuesday afternoon.

It brings the total number of deaths from Covid-19 in hospital settings in the North to 329.

There were 34 new cases which brings the total number of cases in the North to 3,408.

*UPDATE: This was initially reported as 299 new cases, however it has since been clarified the number of new cases is 229.
