80-year old weightlifter busted for steroid use in the US

Doping in sport, it seems, isn’t just restricted to the young whippersnappers, even the auld lads are at it.

According to Associated Press, 80-year old (that’s right, 80 year-old) weightlifter Don Ramos has just copped a two-year ban from the US Anti-Doping Agency after he tested positive for steroids while attempting to set a world record in his age group during the Pan American Masters Weightlifting Championships back in June.

It might come as a bit of a surprise to learn that iron-pumpers like Ramos are even competing at that age never mind using steroids but it would appear as if cheating is not exactly a rare occurrence either as the AP report goes on to reveal that USADA suspended nine masters athletes for positive tests two years ago, including one competitor over 50 and three over 60.

Ramos was handed a two-year suspension and as a result will not be able to compete again until 2015 and one suspects that he might now call it quits.

On the other hand, who knows, maybe he’ll come back and have another crack at it when he’s 90 in 2023? After all, hitting 90 didn’t stop this guy…
