The chain will be the first retailers to take this step.

Aldi will be banning the sale of energy drinks to people under 16 years of age in Ireland from March onwards. Soft drinks with over 150mg of caffeine per litre will require proof of age from 1 March 2018 across all 130 of their Irish stores. All of Aldi’s caffeinated energy drink products will be subject to the age-check. This will make Aldi the first supermarket chain or retailer in Ireland to restrict the sale of highly caffeinated drinks to children. The supermarket chain claims it is the first retailer in Ireland to restrict the sale for children. Finbar McCarthy, Aldi Ireland's Group Buying Director said: "We are introducing this age restriction in response to growing concern about the consumption of energy drinks among young people."
