It is also taking up to 27 weeks to provide reports on cancer checks.

It was reported on Wednesday morning that there was a backlog of around 78,000 smear tests following an increase in demand.

In the wake of the CervicalCheck scandal, around 90,000 women availed of the free smear check re-test, which has had a huge impact on waiting times both to get checked, and for the results of those tests to be provided.

As reported by RTE, the HSE has expressed concern over the length of time being taken by laboratories to report on smear checks, which is now, on average, taking 93 days.

This means the average waiting time to get checked is approximately 13 weeks, but in some cases it can take up to 27 weeks for the reports on those checks to be provided.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Oireachtas Health Committee will hear from the HSE and the Department of Health on the latest developments.

Additionally, over 1,000 women who were originally diagnosed with cervical cancer have agreed to a participate in a Government review by a UK team of their smear test slides.
