What’s the easiest way to protect yourself against heart disease? Simply eat two portions of fish every week. Not only will it keep your ticker healthy, it’ll also improve your brain power.
The Irish Independent reports that leading European health experts have said that eating two portions of fish a week is one of the most effective ways of preventing heart disease. Yes, really. Maybe it’s time you started scoffing down fish fingers…
According to the experts, eating fish is much better for overall health than taking those horrible fish oil supplements that you get in health food shops. This is because actual fish contains much more nutrients and benefits rather than just popping a pill every day.
This new fish-eating guidance was issued by the European Society of Cardiology at its EuroPrevent conference in Dublin, a conference that apparently extolled the virtues of stuffing our faces with sea dwelling animals.
If you want to add more fish to your diet, then one of the portions that you eat should be an oily kind of fish, such as salmon, mackerel or trout. Sardines are good too, if you can stomach them. These fish contain the highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids, so not only will you be keeping your heart safe – you’ll be keeping your mental faculties sharp too.
“Omega 3 fatty acids are really important to human health, whether you’re talking about CVD, brain or immune health. Health professionals have a key role to play in educating the public about the beneficial effects of including fish in their diets,” said Philip Calder, a metabolic biochemist and nutritionist from the University of Southampton.
“It’s important that health professionals give clear guidance around the need for patience to take 1g of omega 3 a day to achieve any beneficial effects,” he added.
Right so, fish twice a week for better health, better health in the future and a massive brain. Sounds good to us…
