Fears arise over global EpiPen shortage

EpiPen shortage

Worrisome news for many.

EpiPens are typically used as an auto-injector device used to manage potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions to allergens, for example, peanuts. Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for life-threatening allergic reactions.

However, there is worrying news for those with serious allergies at the moment, as EpiPen devices are in short supply — with many unable to procure new ones.

EpiPen and EpiPen Junior devices, which are supplied by Mylan and produced by Pfizer, have faced shortages in many countries, including Ireland, for months. The crisis has become especially serious for young sufferers, as the Junior version is completely unavailable.

According to the Irish Times, Health Products Regulatory Authority has confirmed that this shortage will be relieved by October 10.

However, it has been speculated as to whether the restock in October will be able to meet the increased demand generated by the recent shortage.
