Anything for extra points.

It would be beneficial in two ways.

Whether you are entering your final year of school, have just collected your results or have been out of the place for twenty years, you’d agree that gaining extra points before the exams start would be extremely helpful.

Better still, what if obtaining these extra points also meant getting fit and active? This might come as a welcome distraction from having your head in the books.

Irish Personal Trainer and Operation Transformation star, Karl Henry, believes that there is an easy answer to gaining extra points in the Leaving Cert that could also be beneficial towards your health too.

Henry put up a tweet on Leaving Cert results day that said: “Bonus Leaving Cert points for achieving a basic bleep test fitness level in 6th year, would be a great incentive to stay active in school.”

Speaking to JOE, the personal trainer hopes his tweet can start a conversation that could see his simple idea become reality.

“It’s such a simple idea that would yield massive results and improvements in the drop off of exercise and health as the school cycle matures into 5th/6th year,” he said.

“It hasn’t gone to any higher powers but I would love some support on it obviously, simple ideas can often be the most powerful and I truly believe this is one of those.

“Achieve the score and you get the extra 10/20 points. Again keeping it super simple, the issue isn’t with the fit athletic pupils, it’s with those who don’t exercise which increases the chance that they won’t exercise in college or in later life.

“The score to get would be 7 for girls and 8 for boys. A simple score for students to work toward, hit and in turn get the bonus [points].”
