Get fit, look fit: Skinny tracksuit pants are where it’s at

Here's the skinny on the skinny trackies

Conor Heneghan

Once the subject of ridicule, now they’re all the rage.

Long after skinny jeans became part of the mainstream and something of a phenomenon in men’s fashion, the sporting world maintained a stubborn resistance.

People partaking in all sports in Ireland continued the age-old trend of stuffing the ends of their baggy tracksuit pants into their socks on wet and muddy pitches, refusing to acknowledge the practical aspect of the skinny trackies for fear of being laughed out of town.

Once seen as something that ‘yer man Paul Galvin would wear’ skinny tracksuit pants are now everywhere to be seen and not before time either.

Here are some of the best available options on the market.

O’Neill’s Ria Skinny Pants (€38)

The GAA is an association where tradition dies hard and fancy new innovations aren’t always welcomed, so O’Neill’s had a lot to lose when introducing skinny tracksuit pants to hurlers and Gaelic Footballers a couple of years’ back.

The current crop of inter-county stars are probably more fashion-conscious than their predecessors and the skinny trackies are now a common sight all the way down to club level.

These babies are neat, tidy and stylish and yours with change to spare from 40 lids.

adidas sport essentials pants (€29)

If you’re looking for a pair of skinnies that you’ll feel comfortable lounging around the house in as well as working out in, then these will be right up your street.

Thanks to a sale on the adidas website right now, they can be yours for just under 30 quid.

Puma Evolution Track Pants (€60)

You’ll have to fork out a few extra quid for one of Puma’s range of skinny track bottoms, but the material is soft and comfortable and they do look very sharp too.

Nike Strike Elite Men’s Soccer Football Trousers (€58)

With a long-winded name like this, Nike seem to be trying to settle the age-old ‘soccer v football’ debate as well as providing a quality product.

Potential buyers should beware that these pants are ultra-skinny and probably only suitable for exercise as opposed to casual purposes; you don’t necessarily want to go put anything ‘on display’ after all.

Men’s Under Armour Pulse Warm-Up Trousers (€50)

Not as skinny as the alternatives above, but they won’t be hanging off your leg either, these Under Armour pants are as suitable for working out in chilly conditions as they are for wearing on a lazy day on the couch.
