There’s a new healthy protein chocolate spread on the market and here’s the verdict

Go'wan then.

Converting a favourite treat into a somewhat more healthy alternative is serious #foodgoals.

Which is why when we spotted Proteinella we were oh-so intrigued.

Described as a “smooth hazelnut and cocoa spread” it arrives in Lidl stores on August 10 and will be priced at €3.99 for 400g.

We got our hands on a coveted tub this afternoon and so were able to try it out before it lands.

Lidl says it’s a “delicious alternative” to unhealthier chocolate spreads as it has “no palm oil, no added sugar, and is protein-enriched”.

The supermarket recommends spreading it on oat cakes, apples, or adding it to “your post-workout porridge”.

Here’s how we got on…

Look:

The spread looks really great. Gorgeously rich, milk chocolate colour and a lovely consistency.

Smell:

First sniff wasn’t all that fantastic – definitely had a distinct ‘protein’ smell. Second and third tries were much better; you could really get a whiff of all the chocolatey goodness.

Taste:

I didn’t have overly high expectations – but actually the Proteinella is delicious. It didn’t seem all that different from the less healthy alternatives. There is a slight protein ‘grit’ to it but overall this is an excellent choice if you’re after a chocolate spread that is also pretty good for you.
