Nearly 30 per cent of Irish people don’t do any exercise, according to CSO study

Do you fall into that category?

Do you fall into that category?

Would you consider yourself an active person?

Are you the type who just about manages to get off their arse and work up a sweat once or twice a week?

Or do you belong in the category of Irish people who don’t participate in any form of physical activity whatsoever?

If it is indeed the latter category you belong in then you’re far from alone as figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) earlier today revealed that just under three in 10 Irish people over the age of 15 are considered ‘not physically active’.

The figures, which were collected for a module on sport and physical exercise as part of the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) from April to June 2013 (quarter 2), revealed that 27.5 per cent of Irish people are not physically active – 26.8 of males and 28.2 per cent of females.

The term ‘not physically active’ refers to people who do not participate in sport and who only walk for the purpose of getting from place to place as opposed to walking for recreational purposes.

Of those who do consider themselves physically active, the figures revealed that just under 40% of people participated in sport and/or physical activity – excluding walking, see the breakdown of the choice of sport below.

Over 10 per cent of people, meanwhile, participated in physical activity for over one hour three or four times a week.

It’s a fairly wide-ranging study overall and you can see the results in full here.

As well as making for interesting reading, it may well make you think about your own habits related to exercise and physical activity when you see how they compare to the rest of the country.
