The move is precautionary as part of contact tracing from the first confirmed case.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has written to members of a small musical group asking them to self-isolate as a precautionary measure following contact with the first case of Covid-19 in Ireland.

The HSE said no other confirmed case of the virus has been reported and the request to self-isolate is part of contact tracing being conducted by public health officials.

It’s thought the patient who contracted the virus attended a band session for a two-hour period over the weekend.

The HSE said to prevent a possible spread of the infection, all members of the group have been asked to self-isolate until 15 March.

Earlier reports from the HSE saying the letter was a hoax have proved to be false and the HSE has since deleted a tweet about the subject.

JOE has contacted the HSE and the Department of Health for clarity on the matter, but no response has yet been provided.

On Tuesday morning, Dublin City University said that no cases of coronavirus have been reported on its campus and that images and videos circulating on social media are fake.

Covid-19 was caused by a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before and has come from animals.

It originated in the Huanan seafood wholesale market in Wuhan, China.

The outbreak has affected more than 89,000 people globally, with a total death toll in excess of 3,000. The vast majority of these deaths and reported cases have occurred in China.
