A great effort for a great cause.
Mental Health week took place in Ireland earlier this month and amongst a series of events that occurred throughout the country, a PhD candidate and tutor in University of Limerick sought to raise awareness of suicide in this country by taking on seven challenges in seven days.
Monaghan man Tony Sheridan, who has appeared on Irish TV shows like Come Dine with Me and The Gym in the past, asked people around the university to come up with seven challenges for him to complete in seven days for #7DaysForSuicide, challenges which included kayaking down the Shannon, extreme rock climbing on Carrantuohill, performing live stand-up comedy and jumping out of a plane. No big deal.
While the video helps raise awareness of something that is a huge issue in Ireland, particularly amongst young males, mental health is particularly close to Tony’s heart as he lost his own mother to suicide and struggled with his own mental health in the past.
As he says himself, the video is very relevant as he is a young man talking about his journey from being suicidal to loving life and he genuinely believes that his story could resonate with someone and help them seek the help they need and save their life.
Tony has set up a page on mycharity.ie that people can donate to here and all the proceeds will be split between two charities, Console and Pieta House.
Fair play to Tony for making such an inspirational effort for such an important cause and if you feel the need to talk about any issues surrounding mental health, check out the links below.
